ISS students range from casual beginners to experienced painters of more than 20 years. Many ISS students are professional artists, and many are passionate hobbyists. The common denominator is a willingness to take risks and a commitment to furthering artistic growth.
The student who gets the most from ISS is the student who realizes that polishing their watercolor technique is not the guarantee of success. They know that the most satisfying art-making is the result of discovering and opening the door to personal expression and unique imagery. ISS is the environment that challenges and nurtures the artist who is ready to do the work of finding that door.
While the faculty of artists and teachers is always ready and prepared to offer technical help for those who need it, we will always direct the student to think creatively with an attitude of “what if” rather than “how to."
Every slide program, lecture, demonstration, and critique is designed to help you, the student, move ever closer to realizing your potential as an artist.
It would be an accurate observation to say that ISS students are generally intelligent, hard working, have a good sense of humor, and would rather have glorious failure than a discreditable success. They are connoisseurs of good food, wine and the ever popular margarita. They enjoy exploring the many galleries in Taos or Santa Fe. Most of all though, ISS students are committed to their art and supportive of each other, whether they are long time friends or new acquaintances.
